Recently and suddenly hosting for the The Australian Herpetology Website was stopped by kingsnake and the website was taken offline.

Things to do on Kos Island - Kos Churches

There are numerous churches spread throughout Kos Island. Most are small and look something like this Church (Pictured) on Mt. Zini (near Kefalos), with fantastic views of Kefalos Bay

The Church of Saint John the Baptist (Epta Bemata), (photo) is still in use at the Cemetery at Kos Town and it is said to contain frescoes dating back to the 12th and 13th century. It was originally an early christian baptistery of the 5th - 6th century

Another Church (Photo) is in Ruins but again the Views of Kefalos Bay are fantastic. It is located west of Kefalos

Another interesting Church (pictured )is located in Old Pyli (Paleo Pyli) where you can wander around the abandoned town

Visit The Duck Pond on Kos Island

The Duck pond is located on the Main Road (to Airport) between Tingaki and Pyli
The Pond is at a turn off to Pyli, near some restaurants.You may be able to feed the ducks and possibly the terrapins or eels if they haven't eaten too much already.

Pictured is the Balkan Terrapin, a species native to Kos Island and an American Red Eared Slider which is not native to Greece. The locals have told me that the Lake is bottomless and connects to the sea, and that a car that ran into the lake vanished below the silt and was never found!

Visit Kalymnos - From Kos Island

Kalymnos is famous for its sponges and is located approximately 12 km Northwest of Kos Island.
It is also popular with rock climbers.

Visiting Nissyros from Kos Island

Nyssyros (also spelt Nisyros) is an active volcanic island around 30 km from Kos to the South West.

A sign (pictured) is displayed in the main street of Tingaki at one of the tour operators (2007 price).

The volcano last erupted in 1886 and will probably erupt again in the foreseeable future.

A picture taken from Kardamena also shows smaller Islands near Nysyros

Nysyros is one of the most interesting volcanoes in Greece, and you can walk into the crater so good shoes are required.

Visit Rhodes From Kos Island

Nothing is left of the Colossus of Rhodes, which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, but old pictures show it (probably incorrectly) straddling the Harbor

The harbor pictured (for medium sized boats) has statues of deer on pedestals, a Stag on one side and Doe on the other.

Next to the harbor is the imposing entrance to the picturesque Old Town of Rhodes through the City Wall

Once inside the walls you find yourself in the oldest medieval city in Europe

Zia has some fantastic views and sunsets.

The Odeon , Kos Island, Greece

Located in Kos Town, the odeon is a short walk from the Roman House, the Altar of Dionysus, and the Western Archaeological Site.

The Odeon was built by the Romans somewhere around the second or third century AD.

The first nine rows of seats of the odeon are the original marble ones used by important citizens of the time.

The Odeon in Kos has been restored and is still used occasionally.

Hippocrates Plane Tree , Kos Island Greece

The famous plane tree of Hippocrates is near the entrance to the Neratzia Castle in Kos town. It is a huge tree, supposedly the largest in Europe.

It is claimed that it was planted by Hippocrates, the "Father of Medicine", who taught under its shade. It is said that the Apostle Paul is also taught here.

Agios Fokas Thermi, Kos Island, Greece

The Agios Fokas Thermi (hot thermal beach spring) is at the south side of the west end of Kos Island. The water is around 40 degrees centigrade which is like a very hot bath.

Most people park at the top of the hill and walk down a steep road to the beach, however if you think your vehicle will make it back up the hill, you may be able to park much closer.

There are cafes at the main car park and a restaurant next to the Pool.

The hot water smells of sulphur and reputedly has medicinal qualities for treating rheumatism and arthritis

The Plaka, Kos Island Greece

The Plaka is a popular picnic area, away from the main road between the Airport and Paradise Beach.

The Plaka is known for the feral peacocks that live there.

The Asklepion on Kos is said to be the first hospital which makes it a "Monument of Universal Cultural heritage"

Pictured are the remains of a Temple dedicated to Apollo built in the 2nd Century AD, and a Terrace Wall.

A Tourist "train" regularly visits the site from Kos Town which is 3 or 4 kilometers away.

The Asklepion is about 7km from Tingaki

Remains of the Thermes are also pictured. These are remains of baths from the 3rd century AD.

Paradise Beach / Paradise Beach, Kos, Greece

Paradise Beach also called Bubble Beach this is one of the most popular beaches on Kos Island with beautiful views as you approach it

You will have to snorkel far enough away from the shoreline far enough to see the unusual bubbles of volcanic gasses which may be difficult to find.

Besides the "water park" in the sea there are other "water sports" to participate in.

Old Pyli Castle
